I've been styling women for over a decade, and I can tell you this with complete confidence: nothing transforms how you look quite like wearing the right colour.

I've seen a client put on a piece in coral and suddenly glow: skin luminous, eyes bright, like someone just switched on a light. Then I've seen her try the exact same cut in a washed-out pink, and she looked tired. Exhausted, actually. Same woman. Same body. Completely different colour.

The difference isn't magic. It's colour science. And once you understand your palette, everything changes. You stop buying things that don't make you feel amazing. You wear the clothes you own. Getting dressed becomes easy, confident, and genuinely fun.

This guide walks you through identifying your colour palette, understanding how undertones work, and exactly how to shop pieces on Capsule Chic Hub that will make you glow. No guesswork. Just colours that love you back.

Why Colour Analysis Matters

Before we dive into undertones and palettes, let me explain why this matters so much.

Colour isn't neutral. It interacts with your skin, hair, and eyes in specific ways. Every person has a natural colouring, and every colour has a temperature. When those temperatures match, something remarkable happens: the colour makes your skin appear clearer, your features seem more defined, and your whole face lights up.

When they clash? Your face can look muddy, tired, or washed out, no matter how perfectly the piece fits your body or how much you love the design.

I see this every single day. A client who genuinely loves royal blue might spend years thinking she doesn't look good in blue, because she's been wearing cool blues that drain her. Then I show her a warm teal, and her whole face changes. Suddenly she looks rested, healthy, and radiant.

That's not the dress doing anything different. That's her natural colouring finally meeting colours that speak her language.

Understanding your colour palette saves you money, saves you time, and most importantly, saves you from buying beautiful pieces that you never actually feel good wearing. When you know your colours, you can trust your instincts. You can walk into a shop and reach for things that will make you feel incredible.

Warm vs. Cool Undertones: How to Identify Yours

Every colour temperature exists on a spectrum: warm or cool. Your natural colouring (your skin, your hair, your eyes) also has a temperature. Matching these temperatures is the foundation of colour analysis.

Let's break this down in practical terms.

What Are Undertones?

Your undertone is the subtle colour beneath the surface of your skin. It's not about whether you're fair or dark, olive or peachy. It's about whether that base is warm or cool.

Warm undertones have yellow, red, or golden undertones. Think honey, amber, peach, or bronze running through your skin.

Cool undertones have pink, red, or blue undertones. Think rose, silver, or blue running through your skin.

(You might also hear the term "neutral undertones". These sit somewhere in between and often work with both warm and cool colours.)

How to Find Your Undertone

This is simpler than you think. You don't need fancy lighting or special tools. Try one of these tests:

The Gold vs. Silver Test

Hold a piece of gold fabric (or gold jewellery) against your skin, then a piece of silver. Which one makes you look healthier, more awake, more radiant? That's your temperature. If gold looks better, you're warm. If silver looks better, you're cool.

The White Paper Test

Hold a white piece of paper against your skin in natural light. Does your skin look yellow or peachy next to it? That's warm. Does it look pink or rosy? That's cool. If it's hard to tell, you might be neutral.

The Veins Test

Look at the veins on your inner wrist in natural light. Are they more green? That suggests warm undertones. More blue or purple? That suggests cool undertones. Green and blue equally? You might be neutral.

The Simple Observation

Have you always looked better in gold jewellery or silver? Do people always compliment you in warm, earthy tones, or do you feel most yourself in jewel tones and cool neutrals? Your gut instinct often knows.

Once you've identified whether you're warm, cool, or neutral, you've got the foundation for your colour palette. But there's more to it, because not all warm colours are created equal, and the same goes for cool.

The Four Colour Palettes

Beyond undertones, colour analysis divides into four core palettes. On Capsule Chic Hub, I use names you'll recognise immediately: Spring, Summer, Autumn, and Winter. Each one describes the feeling of its colours: the warmth or coolness, the brightness or softness. You'll probably recognise yourself in one of them straight away.

Spring

If you have warm undertones with bright, clear colouring (think fair skin with rosy cheeks, warm golden blonde hair, or deep warm skin with high contrast), you're a Spring. Your colours are warm, fresh, and alive, like the first flowers breaking through.

Your colours shine in:

  • Warm reds and corals
  • Warm oranges and rust tones
  • Warm golds and warm bronzes
  • Warm greens like olive and moss
  • Warm neutrals: cream, warm grey, warm brown, cognac
  • Clear, saturated colours (nothing muted)

Avoid:

  • Cool metallic shades
  • Dusty or muted cool tones
  • Icy pastels
  • Pure black (warm brown or very deep warm tones work better)

In practice: You look radiant in warm coral, burnt orange, warm terracotta, and rich warm jewel tones like warm emerald.

On Capsule Chic Hub: Browse pieces in your Spring palette to find colours that make you glow.

Autumn

You have warm undertones with softer, less contrasting colouring. Your natural colours feel gentle: think soft warm blonde, warm skin with less definition, or deeper warm tones that are less saturated. Your palette is warm, but not bold. It's rich, earthy, and grounded.

Your colours shine in:

  • Soft, muted warm tones
  • Warm caramel, warm taupe, and soft browns
  • Dusty peach and warm cream
  • Soft warm greens and sage
  • Warm, earthy neutrals
  • Toned-down, less vibrant versions of warm colours

Avoid:

  • Bright, pure colours (they can overwhelm you)
  • Cool tones and cool silvers
  • Pure black
  • Very bright whites (cream is your friend)

In practice: You look gorgeous in soft caramel, warm taupe, dusty peach, and warm, muted greens. Think "earthy and gentle."

On Capsule Chic Hub: Explore your Autumn palette for pieces in your richest colours.

Winter

You have cool undertones with bright, clear colouring. Your natural colours have contrast and clarity: think cool blonde or cool dark hair, clear skin with definition. Your palette is cool and vivid, so bold, dramatic, and striking.

Your colours shine in:

  • Cool, bright reds and true pinks
  • Cool, bright metallics and true silvers
  • Jewel tones: emerald, sapphire, amethyst (the bright versions)
  • Cool, pure blacks and true whites
  • Cool, clear greys
  • Fuchsia, cobalt, and other bold, cool tones

Avoid:

  • Warm, earthy tones
  • Muted or dusty colours
  • Warm golds and warm bronzes
  • Cream (pure white is better)

In practice: You look stunning in true red, bright pink, sapphire blue, emerald green, and crisp white. Think "jewel box."

On Capsule Chic Hub: Shop your Winter palette for pieces that match your vivid colouring.

Summer

You have cool undertones with softer, less contrasting colouring. Your natural colours feel muted and gentle: think cool ash blonde, cool skin without harsh contrast, or deeper cool tones that feel soft. Your palette is cool, but not vivid. It's soft, elegant, and calm.

Your colours shine in:

  • Soft, muted cool tones
  • Cool greys, soft blues, and dusty mauve
  • Soft pinks and dusty rose
  • Cool, muted greens (eucalyptus, seafoam)
  • Cool, gentle neutrals (soft grey, taupe, greige)
  • Toned-down versions of cool colours

Avoid:

  • Bright, bold colours
  • Warm, earthy tones
  • Very bright whites or blacks
  • Colours with yellow undertones

In practice: You look beautiful in soft blues, dusty rose, cool mauve, seafoam, and gentle, muted greens. Think "cool and calm."

On Capsule Chic Hub: Discover your Summer palette for pieces in your most flattering shades.

Which Palette Is Yours?

Here's the thing: you don't have to fit perfectly into one box. Some women find they sit right in the middle of two palettes, and that's actually quite common. Use the palette that resonates most strongly with you. When you stand in front of the mirror in a colour from your palette, you'll feel it. Your face will light up. That's your confirmation.

Not sure? Start with your undertone test. Are you warm or cool? If you're warm, you're either a Spring (bright and clear) or an Autumn (soft and muted). If you're cool, you're either a Winter (vivid and high-contrast) or a Summer (gentle and soft). Then test it: wear a colour from that palette and see how you feel.

The Colours That Make You Glow

Once you know your palette, everything becomes simple. You're not trying to force yourself into colours you love that don't love you back. You're shopping within a colour language that speaks to your natural colouring.

Here's what I want you to understand: knowing your palette doesn't mean you can only wear those colours. It means you know which versions of any colour will make you look your absolute best.

Love coral? Great. If you're warm, you'll glow in warm coral. If you're cool, you'll glow in a cool, blue-toned coral. There's a version of almost any colour that works for you. You just need to know which one.

Building Your Wardrobe Around Your Palette

Once you've identified your palette, use it to build a wardrobe you actually reach for.

Start with your neutral base: the colours you wear most, meaning your trousers, your everyday tops, your shoes. These should be colours from your palette that feel effortless and comfortable for everyday wear. For Spring and Autumn palettes, think warm greys, cognacs, warm browns, creams. For Winter and Summer palettes, think cool greys, soft blacks, taupe, and crisp whites.

Then add your statement colours: the shades that make you feel amazing. These are the colours in items you wear close to your face, so jumpers, tops, cardigans, dresses. If you're a Winter, that might be a jewel-tone dress. If you're an Autumn, that might be a burnt sienna knit. These are the pieces that make people say, "You look amazing in that colour."

Finally, add your accent colours: the smaller touches that add personality. A scarf, a bag, shoes, a belt. These can be any colour from your palette and help tie outfits together without overwhelming.

Shopping Your Palette on Capsule Chic Hub

Here's where it all comes together. Once you know your palette, browsing for pieces becomes so much easier.

On Capsule Chic Hub, every piece is tagged with a colour palette: Spring, Summer, Autumn, or Winter. Just select yours from the filter and you'll only see pieces in colours that suit your natural colouring. Pay attention to the photos. How does the colour make you feel? Does it look luminous, or does it feel flat? Trust that instinct.

When you find pieces you love, ask yourself: "Does this colour match my palette?" If it does, add it to your capsule. If it doesn't, even if you love the design, you probably won't feel amazing wearing it. And that's the whole point of building a capsule wardrobe: pieces you reach for because they make you feel incredible.

If you already know your body shape, or want to figure it out quickly via the body-shape finder, combine it with your colour palette and you've got the most powerful filter there is. Shape tells you what cut to look for. Colour tells you what shade to reach for. Together, they make getting dressed genuinely effortless.

Find Your Colours

Now it's your turn. Take the undertone test. Identify your palette: are you a Spring, Summer, Autumn, or Winter? Then head over to Capsule Chic Hub and filter by your palette. Every piece is tagged, so you'll only see colours that love you back.

Because the truth is, colour is one of the most powerful styling tools you have. When you get it right, everything else falls into place. You feel more confident. Clothes fit better, not physically but emotionally. Getting dressed becomes easier, quicker, and genuinely enjoyable.

Let's find the colours that make you feel like yourself. Your best self.
